Volunteer Opportunities

Policy Volunteers

  • Board of Directors
    Oversight volunteers that establish policies and long-term planning for the YMCA.
    Requires a minimum of two meetings per month along with participation in YMCA activities, advocacy and phone calls. Approximately 20 hours per month.
  • Standing Committees
    Volunteers who work on specific issues that directly affect YMCA operations.
    Committees include: Program/Membership, Seniors, Marketing, Site & Facility and Fund Development. At least one meeting per month. Approximately 5 hours per month.

Program Volunteers

  • League Support Workers
    Volunteers to assist our youth and adult leagues in a support capacity from equipment set-up to scorekeeping. Time is flexible.
  • Youth Sports Coaches
    Individuals who have some level of knowledge or experience in the area of coaching youth and teenagers in a variety of sports to include basketball, soccer, etc. Time limited to sports season.
  • Officials/Referees
    Individuals who have a working knowledge of the rules in basketball, soccer and volleyball. Other sports specialties also accepted. Some positions have stipends available. Time is flexible.

Instructional Volunteers

  • Health & Fitness
    Volunteers able to assist with or conduct health & fitness programs such as aerobics, nutrition, kickboxing, yoga, Pilates, senior activities, etc. Time is flexible but we are interested in consistent attendance. Some positions have stipends available.
  • Sports & Recreation
    Volunteers who are able to assist or conduct recreational activities such as wall climbing, field trips, bicycling, running, lacrosse, hiking, etc. Time is flexible but we are interested in consistent attendance. Some positions have stipends available.

Fundraising Volunteers

  • Event Planners
    Organized and methodic volunteers to help arrange fund raising events and YMCA events such as open houses and dances. Time is approximately 20 hours per event.
  • Sales & Marketing
    Aggressive volunteers to help raise funds for YMCA programs and activities that include soliciting golf teams, hole sponsors, selling corporate and family ducks, sponsors for sports teams and banner sales. Time is flexible and varies according to event.
  • Administrative Assistance
    Volunteer support on the administrative functions for the above events. Time is flexible.

Child Care

  • Caring and nurturing volunteers to work side-by-side with YMCA staff in our child care center at the YMCA Horseheads Branch. All volunteers, without exception, must complete state requirements that include physical, TB test, state clearance check and criminal background check. Opportunities range from reading and playing with school age children to answering phones to caring for infants. Due to background requirements time is flexible but a long-term commitment is needed.
